Our Lady of the Lake Cancer Institute Receives Excellence in Early Detection Award for Innovative AI Partnership
Nov 20, 2024
Baton Rouge, LA – Our Lady of the Lake Cancer Institute is proud to announce it has received a prestigious Excellence in Early Detection Award from the Eon Center of Excellence. This recognition highlights Our Lady of the Lake Cancer Institute’s substantial investments in comprehensive lung cancer programs, including a focus on community and primary care physician outreach, implementation of advanced screening technologies, and incidental lung nodule management, resulting in a remarkable shift toward early-stage cancer detection.
In 2021, Our Lady of the Lake Cancer Institute partnered with Eon to improve early detection efforts, using artificial intelligence to identify patients with potentially cancerous lung nodules. The innovative system allows for efficient management of lung cancer screening (LCS) patients and those identified with incidental lung nodules - abnormalities discovered during treatment for unrelated conditions. After identification, Eon's technology submits patients to the Lung Cancer Screening Registry and ensures timely follow-up to care plans.
As a result of this investment in early detection, Our Lady of the Lake Cancer Institute has achieved a 14x increase in lung cancer screening volume since 2018. Between 2018 and May 2024, patients participating in Our Lady of the Lake Cancer Institute’s lung nodule program were diagnosed with Stage I/II lung cancer 69% of the time, compared to just 34% of the time for all other lung cancer patients. In 2023 alone, 510 patients at high risk for lung cancer were reviewed by a multi-disciplinary team of physicians at Our Lady of the Lake Cancer Institute.
"We are honored to receive this award, which reflects our dedication to making early detection a top priority," said Susan Foret, vice president of operations at Our Lady of the Lake Cancer Institute. "By partnering with Eon, we’ve achieved results that are transforming lung cancer care and making a real difference in the lives of our patients.”
Through Our Lady of the Lake Cancer Institute’s proactive approach, a total of 164 lung cancers have been diagnosed since 2018, with a significant number found with the help of Eon.
Our Lady of the Lake Cancer Institute’s commitment to patient-centered care is evident in the continued expansion of its lung nodule program, which combines state-of-the-art screening technologies, personalized care plans and a multidisciplinary team dedicated to delivering the highest quality of care. By focusing on early detection and patient education, Our Lady of the Lake Cancer Institute empowers individuals to take control of their lung health.
The Eon Center of Excellence (ECOE) accredits and provides resources to healthcare institutions across the country to support better patient outcomes and survival rates. ECOE is dedicated to enhancing the early identification and management of incidental findings in lung cancer. Our Lady of the Lake Cancer Institute’s achievements exemplify leadership in healthcare and highlight the impact of innovative technology on improving patient outcomes.
